Individuals Stopping Weight-Loss Medications Put On Weight at a Quadrupled Rate Than People Using Diet and Exercise

Weight management involves long-term strategies.

New research reveals that people who stop using blockbuster GLP-1 drugs like Mounjaro or Wegovy can put back on lost weight much more quickly than those who halt conventional diet and exercise plans.

Findings released in a prominent health publication demonstrates that while overweight individuals frequently drop a large proportion of their total mass while using the jabs, the mass comes back at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.

"Individuals buying these medications must be cognizant of the risk of quick weight regain when the medication ends," stated lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of regain means a reversion to starting weight within about a year and a half.

Comparing Approaches

The research, which reviewed dozens of trials involving over 9,000 of patients, contrasted the effects of the injectable medications with older methods.

Researchers note that people who lose weight through dieting typically see a slower weight regain—perhaps 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.

The Reason for the Quick Regain

Doctors believe the mode of action of the jabs accounts for the amplified regain.

These medications mimic a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which helps regulate hunger.

"Artificially providing GLP-1 concentrations several times higher than normal may cause the body to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous hormone, and could reduce sensitivity to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.

"Stopping of this GLP-1 'fix' means hunger is unsuppressed, making overeating a significant risk."

A Lifelong Issue?

Medical guidelines recommend the jabs for individuals with weight-linked medical conditions, alongside prescribed lifestyle changes.

Many experts contend that, due to the significant potential of weight regain, the treatment might need to be long-term.

This perspective is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who note that the results "emphasize the persistent character of obesity," similar to managing diseases like high blood pressure.

User Testimonies

People who have discontinued the jabs explain a sudden resurgence of hunger.

"It felt as if a switch activating and I was suddenly ravenous," said a patient.

This difficulty is compounded if individuals have not developed sustainable dietary or behavioural modifications during treatment.

Growing Adoption

Survey data indicate that millions of adults in the UK have used these injections in the past year, with interest being substantial.

  • Adoption is higher among females compared to men.
  • The middle-aged age group shows the highest usage rates.
  • A large proportion access the drugs through private healthcare rather than the NHS.

In conclusion, experts caution that while GLP-1 drugs are effective agents for weight loss, they are not a permanent solution and lasting health benefits hinges on combined behavioural support.
